We were saddened this week to read of the death of a man in Florida from the brain-eating amoeba shown in the picture 🧠

Naegleria fowleri (Naf to its friends) lives in freshwater. It is perfectly harmless if swallowed, but deadly in 98.5% of cases when it travels to the brain after being inhaled up the nose πŸ‘ƒπŸ½

The famous Roman Baths (see pic) in Bath were closed after Naf was discovered in 1978. One wonders if it was ever a problem for the builders – given their famously impressive proboscides πŸ€”

The first symptoms are a stiff neck and lack of concentration (though don’t panic – scrolling on LinkedIn could also be a cause…). Vomiting, headaches and seizures are followed by death 7-10 days later ⚰️
