Human remains are mostly carried on cargo flights โšฐ๏ธโœˆ๏ธ

Generally, if the deceased has been embalmed, an โ€˜air trayโ€™ is used to protect and conceal the coffin. This is not actually a tray, but an outer container that meets the airlineโ€™s regulations.

If the body has not been embalmed โ€“ or has died of a contagious disease (e.g. covid) a โ€˜Zeigler air trayโ€™ is used. This is a hermetically sealed container made of 20 gauge steel.

The flight alone can be as much as ยฃ20,000 โ€“ however there are many extra costs โ€“ e.g. funeral directors in both countries, paperwork and Zeigler air trays, etc. Frankโ€™s top tipย ๐Ÿ’€ย โ€“ get travel insurance โ€“ which will not only cover the costs, but help you with the process and paperwork.
