These pesky fish🐟 bury themselves in sand in shallow water – the perfect place for bathingπŸ–οΈ β€“ which is why many 1000s of people a year are stung when they inadvertently stand on one🦢πŸ’₯

The venom – reportedly far worse than a wasp sting, is from the spines of the distinctive dorsal fin – clearly seen in this 2009 photo by Tom Oates.

The cure is to put the sting in very hot water – which should cause the pain to fade slowly over about 20 minutes. Folklore suggests adding urine, vinegar or Epsom salts aids recovery – though these aren’t mentioned in the NICE guidelines….
